The Fairfax County Office of the Sheriff in Northern Virginia is well-known for it’s professionalism and dedication to duty. It may soon also become known for it’s tolerance of intolerance.

On November 20, 1998, Deputy Sheriff Robert Cutts was fired for violating a department regulation prohibiting making public statements, intentially making false statements and leaking information to the press. On December 3, 1998, Deputy Sheriff Jabar Shabazz was also fired for the same reason.

Funny thing, neither Cutts or Shabazz leaked documents to the press. The leaked document is question is a draft newsletter from Blacks in Government (BIG), a membership organization for black professionals employed at all levels of government. Both Cutts and Shabazz are members of BIG and say the document was leaked by Noel J. Albert, chairman of the Minority Employees Advisory Council and a Fairfax County employee. Cutts asked Albert to edit the document and return it to him. Albert instead released it to a reporter who then wrote about the deputies’ allegations of tolerance of racism by department leadership. Albert has claimed responsibility for releasing the letter, yet Cutts and Shabazz are still fired from the Department. Why?

The Multiracial Activist believes this to be a classic case of retaliatory firing.

Cutts has accused the sheriff’s office of intolerance towards interracial couples, an accusation supported by his own personnel file, which for several years contained a complaint from a supervisor when Cutts was a recruit at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. The supervisor complained that Cutts was interracially married to a white woman, a fact irrlevant to his training or ability to perform his duties.

Shabazz has accused the department of racism and of tolerating racist activity. These very serious allegations went ignored by department leadership according to the deputies.

The Multiracial Activist believes that Fairfax County Sheriff Carl R. Peed is responsible for the firings and should be held accountable for his gross abuse of power.

Call to Action:

1. Call the Sheriff’s Office and demand that the Deputies be reinstated or send a letter to: Fairfax County Office of the Sheriff, 4110 Chain Bridge, Fairfax, VA 22030.

2. Attend the upcoming civil service hearing for the officers on May 25, 1999 at 7:00 pm at the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035.

3. Support Deputy Sheriff Stan Barry, who is currently campaigning for County Sheriff against Sheriff Peed. Campaign information will be posted to The Multiracial Activist when it becomes available.
