Effort to ban race, gender preferences advances in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A group seeking to ban race and gender-based preferences in university admissions and government hiring says it submitted more than 508,000 signatures to state elections officials Thursday, a major step forward for the group’s campaign.
At least 317,757 valid signatures of Michigan voters are needed to put the proposed constitutional amendment on the November 2006 ballot. Members of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative said they expect no problem in getting enough signatures certified when state elections officials review the petitions over the next few months.
“I think it’s a challenge-proof initiative,” said Ward Connerly, a University of California regent and national leader in the movement to ban race and gender preferences. “But anyone who wants to challenge it — make my day.”

This is really tragic. Not satisfied with screwing up California’s higher education system, or dejected from the defeat of the so-called Racial Privacy proposal in California, Connerly and his creepy crew have taken their show on the road to Michigan.
Sticking one’s head in the sand and pretending that discrimination doesn’t exist and requires remedies is reprehensible. Since California’s law preventing use of race as a determining factor in admissions, the number of “black” and Latino students in the U of California’s system has dropped.
When conservatives point to successful “minorities,” like Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, etc. they always brush over the fact that Clarence and crew got their start because of affirmative action programs. Moreover, conservatives downplay Powell’s and Condi Rice’s statements in support of affirmative action.
