MIXED RACE EXPERIENCE
Written by WARBUCKS26, on 18-05-2007 12:41
In all honesty this is my first time hearing or reading about Melungeons and like always I appreciate knowledge when ever given, especially when it deals with multicultural history.

I myself am part Jamaican and German descent otherwise known as Pennsylvania Dutch.

You see that's one thing about the identity of millions of multiracial people, it will be real challenging to bring people of such diversity together. I've heard of so many different mixtures and listened to different perspectives of identity and the truth is not everyone is on the same page about who they are and that is there right as a human.

I know growing up in Jim Crow Virginia must have definitely been crucial and not being able to claim any family makes it even harder. To think it all started on plantations when black women who were slaves where raped by white slave masters and became pregnant with a child who is mixed. It's not right for white society to create such a situation and then look down on it with shame. Certain people need to accept the history of how things came about and better educate themselves in order to deal with it in a more open minded way.

I've heard the "one drop rule" serveral times and used it myself as a adolecent. I think its just a sense of wanting to fit in or be a part of a group. Being that all my close friends are black and the environment that I lived in was predominantly black it made sense to want to express that side of myself. I expressed feelings in music as I became older and decided to never deny by background and give my story exactly how it is, black and white. Some mixed people would never choose to do the same.

I myself like Charles Byrd went through psychological evaluations and beleieve most mixed people do 'til this day. It will always be an hidden issue until someone of higher power puts it out in the open. Im curious to see Obama attempt this very thing with his background and understanding of multiculturalism. I feel as though he'll be the perfect canidate.
