Comment in question re: Part One: DNA and Vermont Written by Mariza092369 , on 03-12-2002 03:02 Even though I do agree with most of the arguments against DNA testing to prove American Indian decent, I have found that the People are less than helpful when it comes to recieving "new" members. My husband is 1/2 Oklahoma Choctaw by way of his father who has yet to acknoweldge him as his son. The OC Nation has turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the request of my husband to become a member of the Nation. We both want to learn about and contribute to the Choctaw People and also pass on this beautiful culture and history to our children who have a right and a resposibility to know who they are in this universe. We have tried to prove my husband's decent by everyway possible, and yet he is not even acknowledged. The only other recourse we have left is DNA testing so that SOMEONE will listen and not DISCRIMINATE against my husband for not being born from the right mother. I am from both Spanish and Mexican decent and know what it is like to be disciminated against from the age of two, till even now in my thirties, and am appaulled at the rampant racism that exists amoung American Indians and what they like to visciously call half-breeds(that is how they refer to my husband). I think it is a very convienient way for the People to segregate themselves from the rest of the world including the rest of aboriginal people of Mexico(part of North America) Central and South America, but espcially those of us who are not "full blooded". How will the traditions be kept alive if people who are truly dedicated to thier heritage are denide supposed membership and are therefore ostacized? Please help me and my husband understand so that we will not become like so many other families have and let thier culture and heritage become forgotten. How else can we live it if we he is not accepted as a tribemember? How else will they listen but to give proof beyond a doubt? DNA is the only proof left.
