The Great Race Debate Fraud

James Landrith

by James A. Landrith, Jr.
March 26, 1998

This month’s editorial focuses on The President's Initiative on Race. The White House website states that the Initiative’s goals are to:
  • Promote national dialogue on race issues;
  • Increase the nation's understanding of the history and future of race relations;
  • Identify and create plans to calm racial tension and promote increased opportunity for all Americans; and
  • Address crime and the administration of justice.

That is not entirely true. Allow me to explain. Affirmative action is under extreme scrutiny and it’s legality and fairness are coming into question in many states and locales. I am not going to comment on the legality or fairness of affirmative action, I will leave that for another rant.

What is clear, though, is that this Initiative is a thinly veiled attempt by the Administration to shore up support for continuing affirmative action as a national policy. This is reflected by the choice of speakers and constant discussion about affirmative action. (See RNC Talking Points) It seems that any discussion about an aspect of race relations other than affirmative action is quickly and deftly steered back to affirmative action. This initiative is a fraud and a cruel hoax perpetuated by the Administration on minority and majority people alike, who in their quest for racial tolerance and understanding have embraced the Initiative as a vehicle for these hopes. I too share those hopes. I also sincerely hope that the Initiative finds its way back to it's stated goal, this nation and our children deserve that. Just as well, I won’t be holding my breath.

Read this month's editorial, The Great Race Debate at: http://www.multiracial.com/greatracedebate.html. Federal Update Sally Katzen leaves OMB - In the 01/17/98 edition of National Journal, page 122, People column, NJ reported that Sally Katzen, administrator of the information & regulatory division of OMB will transfer to the National Economic Council where she’ll serve as deputy to the NEC director. Ed: That’s one NAACP-owned bureaucrat out of our way.

New census subcommittee - On November 13, 1997, the House voted to create a new subcommittee under the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight to oversee the activities of the Census Bureau. Rep Dan Miller (R-FL) has been named Chairman of this subcommittee, which began operations in January. Formerly, the National Security, International Affairs, and Criminal Justice Subcommittee had jurisdiction over the U.S. Census. Ed: This may be a new opportunity for grassroots activists to make a difference. Start writing those letters now!

Political Update

Civil rights leader and former Georgia state legislator Julian Bond was recently elected Chairman of the NAACP to replace Myrlie Evers-Williams, the outgoing chair. Maybe Mr. Bond will effect some positive change to this once great civil rights group. As Charles Byrd said on Interracial Voice, hopefully one of his first acts will be to fire Mr. Mfume.. I wouldn't count on it.
