The Multiracial Activist
From The Editor: A little birdie clued me in on a story in the July 26, 1998 edition of The New York Times, Week in Review section, titled "Good Times Are Bad for Interest Groups". The story outlined some of the tactics used by advocacy and civil rights organizations in their struggle for funding and power. The NAACP was, of course, a major focus of the story. Last week, Julian Bond, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NAACP, told attendees at the NAACP's annual convention, "for those Americans whose skins are black or brown, their prospects are poorer and the gap is growing wider," he also said, "the poverty rate has gone up while median family income went down. Poverty for black and Hispanic senior citizens went up, children who were poor got poorer, the numbers in poverty doubling, higher here than anywhere else." The story opens by saying that these "numbers" Bond talks about are in direct contrast with reality, according to several government and private research reports published in the past few years. In contrast, also last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center, headed by Morris Dees, scored a huge victory for civil rights in this country with the largest jury award ever imposed against a hate group in this country. This award will put the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, based in Columbia, SC out of business. This is a real victory for civil rights because it sends a message to these hate groups that someone is watching and will bankrupt them if they get out of line. This to me poses a very interesting question. What exactly is a civil rights organization? Is it a group that goes out and voraciously prosecutes and attacks vermin like the Aryan Nations and the Klan, who despise and fear interracial relationships and self-identifying multiracials. Or, is it an organization who used to focus on winning legislative, judicial and social victories in the name of civil rights, but currently uses tactics such as employing slick law professors to publicly ridicule and belittle interracial relationships and self-identifying multiracials? One group is telling us that the glass is half-full, and oh by the way you're only black because you need our protection and the other group is bankrupting a hate group. Just wondering... Subject: Multiracial Identity
Date: Thu, 02 Jul 1998 09:14:23 PDT Dr. Nicholson, Allow me to introduce myself, I'm James Landrith, Director of Project RACE of the National Capitol Area, a local chapter of Project RACE. Project RACE advocates for multiracial children and adults through education, community awareness and legislation. Our main goal is for a multiracial classification on all school, employment, state, federal, local, census and medical forms requiring racial data. I am writing you in support of Mr. Luis Pena, who petitioned Howard University's Board of Trustees regarding adding a multiracial category with racial sub-identifiers on all forms used to obtain race-based data. Project RACE has been advocating this type of category for years. In fact, several states including Maryland have added this type of category to their state forms that collect racial data. We feel that adding the category at Howard University would show an unprecedented understanding and tolerance of racial diversity as well as providing a real choice to multiracial people, instead of relying on Jim Crow leftovers, such as the current mindset, which is to check one only. Will Howard University be in the numbers that support true racial diversity or will they be on list of those who fear and oppose multiracial identity and interracial relations? Dr. Nicholson, I urge you to help in cause of fostering real racial tolerance by helping discard the leftovers of Jim Crow and support Mr. Pena's right to be who he is in mind, body, spirit and finally on paper. Since my start in the multiracial movement almost 2 years ago, many things have been said about me personally and about multiracial activists as a community in the media, public hearings, internet discussion groups, etc.
This movement is not for the weak of heart. Your patience will be challenged and your motives held suspect. The more you talk about interracial/multiracial issues and the more exposure you get, the more likely you're going to be called or described in one of the following ways:
- racist
- Uncle Tom
- sellout
- ashamed of being black/running from your blackness
- feels superior to blacks
- traitor to the "cause"
- naive
Once the namecalling has started, it is important to not dwell on it. Don't let narrow minds influence your mental health and by all means don't spend your precious time, energy and emotion trying to dispute with or change their minds. It's not likely to happen. The guilty parties in the campaign of degradation are bigots whose narrow views have been challenged in some way by our words and actions. Namecalling is a self-defense mechanism they employ in an attempt to shut us up.
Bigots aren't born, they're manufactured over a period of years by a combination of society and environment. They come in all shapes and shades, even brown. Some in the black community, primarily black elites and their brain-washed drones, will tell you that blacks can't be bigoted. They go on to say that Whitey just doesn't understand the difference between black anger and white bigotry. Do not be deceived. Bigotry is bigotry regardless of the shade of the bigot.
Famous Bigots and Bigoted Organizations with a slant against Interracial Marriage and/or Multiracial Identity
- Kweisi Mfume, President and CEO of the NAACP (for racist remarks regarding multiracial identity)
- Dr. Harold McDougall, Professor of Law at Catholic University, Washington, DC and former Director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP (for racist remarks in hearings, discussion panels, etc. related to interracial marriage and multiracial identity)
- National Association of Black Social Workers (hatred of transracial adoption and national campaign of disinformation regarding transracial adoption)
- Rep Danny K. Davis (D-IL) (for his racist remarks regarding self-identitying multiracials)
- National Alliance (white supremacist organization who favors a ban on interracial marriage)
- Matt Hale, Rev. Pontifex Maximus of The World Church of the Creator (for his racist remarks regarding interracial marriage)
The list goes on and on. A bigot with white skin and a bigot with brown skin are just two different symptoms of the same virus - hatred.
