Theory on state history revived Polynesian voyagers paddled into the Santa Barbara Channel sometime between A.D. 400 and 800, researchers say By STEVE CHAWKINS Los Angeles Times In a newly published paper, two scholars have revived the controversial and long-dead theory that Polynesian sailors visited the California coast centuries before the first European explorers planted their flags here.
