The woman who inspired Rabbit-Proof Fence dies at 87

Molly’s 1,000-mile childhood trek across the Australian outback was documented in her daughter’s book and the 2002 film Rabbit-Proof Fence.

As a mixed-race child, Molly was taken away from her mother in 1930 to be trained as a domestic servant at the Moore River native settlement north of Perth.

Her story has become emblematic of the sufferings of the stolen generation, children of Aboriginal descent who were separated from their Aboriginal parents by government policy until the 1970s.

More on the story of Molly, her sister Daisy, and cousin Gracie
