6 million out of 11 million victims of the Holocaust were Jews. The remaining victims were people of various backgrounds, the disabled, Polish Christians and Catholics, Jehovah Witnesses, Rom Gypsies, Clergymen, Non-Nazi/non-conformist whites, Homosexuals, Interracial Couples and their Mixed Offspring1.

The Mixed Race children were the descendants of the African colonized soldiers of the French Army from World War I and German Women. These children were called “Rhineland Bastards” named after the land-(the Rhineland) on both sides of the Rhine River, a buffer zone between Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. These soldiers, declared Neger by the Germans were stationed in the Rhineland and intermarried with the German women which created the Mulatto children dubbed Rhineland Bastards or Rhineland Mischlingers (blood mixing with "alien races).”2 Many believed that these children were from forciable rape and could not have resulted from intermarriage. Hitler in his Mein Kempf wrote that the Afro-German children were an ‘insult to Germany’ and considered the German mothers to have been ‘prostitutes and whores’.3

"The mulatto children came about through rape or the white mother was a whore," Hitler wrote. "In both cases, there is not the slightest moral duty regarding these offspring of a foreign race."4

Hitler vowed to rid Germany of the Mulatto children who he felt threatened the purity of the Aryan race.

The Mulatto children at birth were registered with the government so that they could be carefully watched so that the racial purity laws of the Nazi government, also known as the Nuremberg Laws would be upheld. The Nuremberg Laws stated that a German citizen was one who was of pure German heritage, meaning both parents were of German/white ancestry.

So, in 1935, “a group named "Commission Number 3" was created to resolve the "problem" of the "Rhineland Bastards." Organized under Dr. Eugene Fischer of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics, it was decided that the children would be sterilized under the 1933 Law for the Prevention of Offspring with Hereditary Defects5.

In 1937, 400 to 800 Mulatto children were taken from their homes and sterilized. These children were returned to their parents after sterilization, but were later shipped to concentration camps, in which none were reported as having survived the Holocaust.
