ALEXANDRIA, VA -- On February 20th, South Carolina State Senator Darrell Jackson introduced GB 508 in the South Carolina Senate. GB 508, as introduced, effectively prevents schools residing in South Carolina that practice discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin from receiving state funded scholarships.

Most affected by this bill will be the fundamentalist, private Bob Jones University (BJU), which currently prohibits students from dating interracially and bans interracially married couples from attending the school as a couple.

Last fall, The Multiracial Activist inquired about the school's ban on interracial dating and received a very disturbing letter from school spokesman, Jonathan Pait, outlining the reasons for the ban. Following that letter, James Landrith, Editor & Publisher of The Multiracial Activist applied for admission to BJU and was informed that due to his interracial marriage he could attend, but his wife could not, and vice versa.

As a result of these communications from BJU, hearings are being scheduled for March to discuss GB 508, where Landrith will testify regarding the school's ban on interracial dating and marriages.

The text of the bill, letter, email and further background are available at the following links:

Thank you for sending me correspondence regarding Bob Jones University and for bringing this to America's attention. Sad and amazing.

Of course, as a Libertarian I oppose ALL government scholarships to ALL private schools. For that matter, I oppose all government funding of higher education, regardless of the school policies.

Nevertheless, I'm glad to hear about GB 508.

Thanks for your email,

(and in a gay interracial relationship - I wonder what Bob Jones would have to say about *that* one!)
