OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR

The Honorable Bill Lann Lee
Acting Assistant Attorney General
Civil Rights Division
U.S. Department of Justice
Washington, DC 20530
Dear Mr. Lee:
Thank you for your letter of August 31, 1999, regarding multiracial data tabulation. The U.S. Census Bureau is pleased to be able to comply with your request.
As you can see from the enclosed Decision Memorandum (issued on September 2, 1999), the Census Bureau has decided to meet the needs for redistricting by providing the 63 categories of race in combination with Hispanic/Latino categories tabulated for both total population and people 18 years of age and over. The Census Bureau is in the process of informing the states of this decision.
We look forward to continuing to work with the Department of Justice to provide the states with important data needed to comply with the Voting Rights Act.
Thank you for your interest and for your continuing support of Census 2000.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Prewitt
Director
