I am very interested in learning more about the black Garamante soldiers from Africa who were stationed along the Danube during Roman times, and their subsequent absorption into the population, creating the dark- and wavy-haired people who live there today: the Black Germans.
I belong to this category. I’ve always assumed that the dark features come from actual Italian-peninsula Romans; this is the first that I’ve ever heard of there having been blacks there. This is very interesting, indeed, and if anyone has more data on it, I would appreciate their sharing it with me.
I read about this in Mike Nassau’s articles:
Black Dutch – http://www.geocities.com/mikenassau/BlackDutch.htm
Melungeons and Other Mestee Groups – https://www.multiracial.com/readers/nassau.html

That link is fascinating about the Black Dutch. It seems a lot of different folks used the term in order to be easily accepted into mainstream American society.
My Grandmother says that her father was Dutch from the Netherlands. But this article makes me wonder if he just used the term Dutch in order to be more readily accepted.
Interesting stuff about the Gypsies (mistakenly thought to be from E*gyp*t). Amazing information about Beethoven and Hitler. It just goes to show that we are all so much more closely related than we can imagine. Sorry I can’t help you with more information, but thanks for sharing this with us. (smile)

Hi Saundra,
Thanks for replying to my post. You mentioned Gypsies. Supposedly, I have Gypsy ancestry, too. My father’s fifth (and my sixth) great-grandmother is reputed to have been a Gypsy.
I’d really be interested in finding out more about those black Garamante soldiers who were stationed along the Danube. It would be great to discover that I have an interesting ancestor like that!
I often post on a site called Racial Myths (http://members3./####.com/racial_myths/index.html?1009989143). Some of the discussions get heated, but it is a good forum and there are some knowledgeable posters. There is no registration, and I know your intelligent input would be welcome.
