The Denver Post on Indian trust vote disgraceful:
In the 21st century, Congress should treat American Indians with honesty and respect. Instead, a U.S. House panel took a leap backward by trying to strip Indians of the right to challenge the government’s handling of their trust accounts.
Last week, the subcommittee that writes the U.S. Interior Department’s budget voted to let the Interior secretary unilaterally decide any claim arising from the department’s Indian trust account management. The plan would leave Indians with almost no right to review the settlements or challenge the decisions in court.
So basically, the same mismanaging Department of Interior gets to determine its own amount of mismanagment. Such a deal! Can I expect to get the same treatment if the IRS sues me? How about we start honoring our treaties and make good on our obligations. Its a lot cheaper than eternal lawsuits.
