bilingual/bicultural development research

For those interested in participating, I’ve received the following research announcement:

My name is Amy Snyder Ohta and I am an associate professor in the Department of Asian Languages & Literature at the University of Washington. I am doing an interview study on bilingual and bicultural development of children in families living in the U.S. or Canada in which one parent is from Japan. I am interested in learning about bilingual/bicultural development from the perspectives of the mothers, fathers, children, and adult children involved in the process. I would like to interview:

1) parents in an international marriage with a Japanese spouse who have children that they are raising (or have raised) in North America. I am interested in interviewing both the Japanese parent and the non-Japanese parent, if both can participate. I am also interested in interviewing school-aged children.

2) adult children, of a Japanese mother or father(international marriage), who grew up in North America

Interviews will be by telephone, or in person (for those living in the Seattle or Los Angeles areas). Each interview will be between 15-45 minutes. I do not have money to pay subjects. You may not benefit directly from this study. You donĀ¹t have to answer every question. Participation is voluntary.

For further information, please contact me by email (aohta@u.washington.edu) or telephone (425/827-8057). We cannot assure the confidentiality of any information sent by e-mail.
