It is regularly featured on<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/imgres?q=what+part+of+illegal+don%27t+you+understand+images&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;qscrl=1&amp;nord=1&amp;rlz=1T4GZGN_enUS481US481&amp;biw=1366&amp;bih=612&amp;tbm=isch&amp;prmd=imvns&amp;tbnid=CYTRpaHeXhMm7M:&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/display\/web\/2006\/04\/11\/immigrationpawlenty\/&amp;docid=tDtgv1R4eqz7UM&amp;imgurl=http:\/\/images.publicradio.org\/content\/2006\/04\/11\/20060411_go_home_2.jpg&amp;w=300&amp;h=225&amp;ei=SQ_qT_jOD8200QGWzf2FDQ&amp;zoom=1&amp;iact=hc&amp;vpx=876&amp;vpy=151&amp;dur=1114&amp;hovh=180&amp;hovw=240&amp;tx=136&amp;ty=103&amp;sig=106267431961793882844\" target=\"new\">protest placards<\/a>; it&rsquo;s in their widely circulated<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/message.snopes.com\/showthread.php?t=47660\/\" target=\"new\">emails<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Most anti-immigration types will not say they are anti-<em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">immigration<\/em>, of course &mdash; they&rsquo;re just anti&ndash;<em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">illegal<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>immigration, they say. &ldquo;These people,&rdquo; they rail, righteous with indignation, &ldquo;are here in violation of our<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">laws!<\/em>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Quick question: If you&rsquo;re really opposed only to illegal immigration, then surely you won&rsquo;t object if Congress changes federal immigration law to make it easier for people to come to the United States, right? If we just &mdash;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">voila!<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>&mdash; make all &ldquo;illegal immigrants&rdquo; &ldquo;legal&rdquo;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">by law<\/em>, then where does that leave your argument?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">The truth is, some of these people just don&rsquo;t like immigrants. They want as few as possible to come to the United States, but they don&rsquo;t have the courage to say it, so they hide behind current immigration law to deny those who want a better lives for themselves and their families such an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Imagine if we applied their thinking consistently. It wouldn&rsquo;t take long for many of those who claim they oppose<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">only<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">illegal<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>immigration to be singing a different tune.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Take the recent<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/District_of_Columbia_v._Heller\" target=\"new\"><cite style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">Heller<\/cite><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>decision,<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>which overturned Washington, D.C.&rsquo;s, draconian gun laws. How many &ldquo;law and order&rdquo; conservatives were on hand to chide those hoping the court would overturn D.C.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">law?<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>(&ldquo;Hey, Second Amendment Lover: What part of &lsquo;illegal&rsquo; do you not understand?&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Some Americans express outrage when a municipal government<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erikkain\/2011\/08\/03\/the-inexplicable-war-on-lemonade-stands\/\" target=\"new\">harasses some young person for running a lemonade stand<\/a>, citing health and safety laws, permit fees, and business-license requirements. But isn&rsquo;t that an<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">illegal<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>business? (&ldquo;Hey, Free-Enterprise Advocate: What part of &lsquo;illegal&rsquo; do you not understand?&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Oh, that&rsquo;s different, they&rsquo;ll say. Owning a gun and operating a business &mdash; those are important constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">You mean, like freedom?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">In that vein, let&rsquo;s ask another question: If you oppose only<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">illegal<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>immigration, then what are your feelings on escaped slaves in the antebellum South? After all, they were breaking the law when they ran away &mdash; when they<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; font-style: italic\">immigrated<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>&mdash; to a non&ndash;slave state!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Many Americans at the time understood the right of people &mdash; all people &mdash; to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and helped runaway slaves. So much so that pro-slavery forces in Congress pushed through<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fugitive_Slave_Act_of_1850\" target=\"new\">a federal law<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>that threatened six months&rsquo; imprisonment and a $1,000 fine for anyone who helped a slave to escape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Freedom-loving Americans understood that in any conflict between law and right, right should prevail. The law be damned. They didn&rsquo;t say, &ldquo;Escaping from your master is illegal &mdash; what part of that do you not understand?&rdquo; Instead they demanded that slavery be abolished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Law, in any republic, should be sacrosanct; it should be inviolable &mdash; but never as an end in itself. Law exists to serve the people, to protect their rights &mdash; to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Those are the rights of &ldquo;all men&rdquo; &mdash; each and every human being.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">The American colonists lived under a government that violated their rights, and in defiance of the law (&ldquo;&lsquo;Hey, colonists,&rsquo; shouted the King, &lsquo;what part of &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; do you not understand?&rsquo; And the colonists, sufficiently cowed, laid down their arms and went back to sipping tea&rdquo; is not part of our national narrative!) they overthrew their government so that another could be established in its place &mdash; one where &ldquo;Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness&rdquo; might be enjoyed by everyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\"><span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: &#39;Times New Roman&#39;; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a; font-family: Georgia,&#39;Times New Roman&#39;,serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px\" class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; line-height: 30px; color: #17758f\" class=\"author fn\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fff.org\/author\/scott-mcpherson\/\" title=\"Posts by Scott McPherson\">Scott McPherson<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"authormeta\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-width: 0px; outline-width: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent; display: block; word-wrap: break-word\">Scott McPherson is policy adviser at The Future of Freedom Foundation.
