Powell<br>Subject: Letter to the Editor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While channel surfing I came upon a disturbing UBN \u201creality\u201d show called \u201cBlind Date.\u201d The idea is to follow the contestants on a \u201cblind date\u201d and amuse the audience with embarrassing cartoonish \u201cword balloons\u201d supposedly giving the \u201cthoughts\u201d of the contestants. This episode paired a \u201cblack\u201d male with a woman who looked somewhat \u201cmixed\u201d and who was apparently adopted by \u201cwhites\u201d or otherwise reared in a \u201cwhite\u201d home and social environment. This fact made the \u201cblack\u201d male uncomfortable. He peppered her with the usual \u201crace loyalty\u201d questions: \u201cDo you hate black people?\u201d; \u201cDo you see yourself marrying a white man or a black man?\u201d, etc. The woman seemed to be a very nice, level-headed person. She explained that the great majority of her social contacts are \u201cwhite\u201d and she presumed that she would probably marry a \u201cwhite\u201d man. The \u201cblack\u201d male pronouned her a \u201cracist\u201d (through the word balloons) and was assisted in this character assassination by the sneering \u201cwhite liberal\u201d host who announced to the audience that the \u201cblack\u201d male had been rejected \u201cbecause of the color of his skin\u201d (as opposed to being an \u201ca**h***,\u201d which he was). The \u201cword balloons\u201d had the woman \u201cthinking\u201d stuff like \u201cI\u2019m better than you; I\u2019m one-sixteenth white.\u201d The reality is that SHE was expected to accept a man who hated her family, upbringing and values. HE was never criticized for the obvious racial chip on his shoulder. The \u201cwhite\u201d host ended the program by taking a racist shot at the woman.\u201dMaybe next time we\u2019ll pair her with a white guy \u2013 Michael Jackson.\u201d (ha, ha, sneer, sneer). As for this hypocritical crap about \u201cthe color of his skin,\u201d I wanted to ask the \u201cwhite\u201d host how many \u201cblacks\u201d HE has dated. Doesn\u2019t HE pick his dates based on the \u201ccolor of their skin\u201d? Why did the producers of the show take pains to pair two people they considered \u201cblack\u201d instead of ignoring \u201crace\u201d? Who\u2019s the racist here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This racist program is a prime example of how old fashioned racism is being revived under the guise of defending \u201cblacks\u201d from \u201cuppity\u201d mulattoes and others who don\u2019t kow tow to the \u201crace\u201d loyalists. The message of the program was not really different from old-line anti-miscegenation propaganda. This \u201cuppity\u201d woman though she was as good as \u201cwhites\u201d and entitled to marry a member of the \u201csuperior race.\u201d She had to be \u201cput in her place.\u201d The difference is that this racism is being promoted in the name of defending the \u201cpride\u201d of \u201cblacks\u201d as opposed to their \u201cinferiority.\u201d The \u201cwhite\u201d host gets to indulge in the luxury of some old fashioned racism without feeling guilty.
