Powell<br>Subject: May 17 NPR \u201cTalk of the Nation\u201d program promotes \u201cone drop\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.npr.org\/cf\/cmn\/cmnpd01fm.cfm?PrgDate=05\/17\/2001&amp;amp;PrgID=5\">May 17 second hour of the National Public Radio program \u201cTalk of the Nation\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;(3-4 p.m. Eastern, 2-3 pm Central) will feature Earl Lewis (\u201cblack\u201d ) and Heidi Ardizzone (\u201cwhite\u201d) the academic authors of \u201cLove on Trial: An American Scandal in Black and White,\u201d a history of the 1920\u2019s Rhinelander case. This \u201cscandal\u201d of the period involved a high society man in New York state who tried to get an anullment of his marriage to a quadroon by claiming that she lied about her \u201crace.\u201d Even though their book states that Alice Jones, the woman in question, did not consider herself \u201cblack\u201d (nor did her parents and three sisters), the authors call her \u201cblack\u201d throughout the book.
