So why is he getting publicity when Lawrence Tenzer doesn\u2019t? I believe it is because Tenzer shows that Northern whites were aware of the fact that there was no clear dividing line between the \u201cpure\u201d white and the \u201cimpure\u201d white who might be a slave because of the accident of maternal slave descent unbroken by manumission. This and other factors made slavery a threat to \u201cwhites\u201d in general. That\u2019s why Northern states passed personal liberty laws to nullify the effect of the federal Fugitive Slave Law. Talty, by contrast, follows the \u201cpolitically correct\u201d line of pretending that there are \u201cpure\u201d Caucasians and \u201clight-skinned blacks.\u201d The \u201cpure\u201d types are the only ones HE considers \u201cwhite,\u201d but antebellum Northern whites were of a very different opinion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 20:31:57 -0500From: A.D.
