{"id":961,"date":"2005-09-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-09-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/multiracial.com\/wp\/index.php\/2005\/09\/27\/got-indian-in-your-family\/"},"modified":"2016-12-13T07:48:55","modified_gmt":"2016-12-13T07:48:55","slug":"got-indian-in-your-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/multiracial.com\/index.php\/2005\/09\/27\/got-indian-in-your-family\/","title":{"rendered":"Got Indian in Your Family?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Got Indian in Your Family?<br \/> Pop and Politics<br \/> September 27, 2005<br \/> by Cherryl Aldave<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the sweaty-neck, dusty leg town of Tarboro, North Carolina, I quickly learned that Bible belters don&#8217;t mince words when it comes to race.<\/p>\n<p>In Southern towns like Tarboro it&#8217;s not unusual to hear the question, &#8220;Do you have Indian in your family?&#8221; especially if the person asking suspects you&#8217;re &#8220;too light to be all Black&#8221; or &#8220;too dark to be all White.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I was asked this a lot as a child, and my mother insists that one of our ancestors was indeed Native American. But in doing research for my forthcoming book of essays I discovered that, while thousands of Americans share this history of Indian ancestry, sometimes &#8220;Indian&#8221; may have been Melungeon.<\/p>\n<p>I know.
