Dear Landrith,

I am originally from Burma. I was discriminated based on my national origin. I am a student at Regent Unversity as LL.M and Government Policy. I was accepted as a conditional status in the fall of 1999. I don’t even know how many minority students were accepted as a provisional status. When I started my class, the school of Government didn’t allow me to take joint class, however, I have never seen that rule in the student hand book. I tried and at last they allow me to stay. But, they monitored my email and my telephone conversations. They changed my grades, and they reported me to my lender even in my class physically. Now I got an email from Kathy Poulos Minott, so she is trying to help me. I will send you the copy of my complaint letter to OCR of US EDucation.

Thanks,
Kai

    Dear Landrith,

When I started studying at Regent University, I had a friend in Okalahoma who is studying at Oral Robert University. Her name is Amanda Sander. She was in Burma in 1996, when I visited my families over there. One day I called her, spoke with her. She looks like not a real pure white. She looks like Spanish and white mixed. At that time, I was engaged already, and I never made any decision to get married to American White woman, because most of them are divorced, I don’t trust at all, it is happened in the Church also. And then she suggested me to talk with Anna Spiegel who is a student in Communication at Regent University. We email each other back and forth and to meet each other. My emails were messed up by computer service. Besides, one day she called me and said Kai, we shouldn’t talk each other because of some circumstances. I told her, Anna what’s wrong with it, I am an engaged person, and she said it is not your fault. I vehemently believe that Regent University is practicing anti-multiracial School. Besides, my phone was monitor and taped. What they wanted to know is whom I speak to—white or colored person. I have decided not to get married a white woman since 5 years ago. However, I do accept multiracial marriage and culture. I might marry to anybody except a pure white. I am very glad I am married to my relatives who is an honors student at her mathematics in Rangoon University. Let me tell you a Hindu proverb, saying ” When you are on the top, don’t think you are the most high, also when you are at the bottom, don’t think you are the lowest, at all times, someone will be higher than you and lower than you. One day two white men were climbing on Himalya mountain. One guy was at the bottom of the hill, the other guy climb up to about 300 ft and looked at back to his friend, and shouted I saw you like a small chicken, and the other guy looked at back to him and said I saw you like the same small chicken. In the same way, white people will see colored people are lower than them how about your opinion my colored fellows. For me I never look up to them. We all are equal and the same.

  2. Dear Landrith,
I could write a book just based on my experiences at Regent University. I got suspended over the amount of grievances I had with a select officials at the school who either, like you attempted to sabotage my grade – which is usually what they want to do anyway, to disqualify you from graduation so that they can arrogantly state that “other students” other meaning students of a different National origin usually from the East, flunked out and weren’t as intelligent as they were portraying only the American students as adept to their education programs comparable to their immigrant counterparts. Out of the tons of grievance emails I sent complaining about mishandling of coursework by Regent Professors to the administrative office, which I by the way, stopped counting at 60, only 8 of those were used to sanction and suspend me. Out of those 8 emails, there was an email about the financial aid business office withholding Federal funds which were released by the Dept. of Education which the financial aid office withheld which created hardships for me and I was suspended because I complained or should I say had the audacity to confront the official over it which she later reported that I had requested the funds to cover for other educational expenses. I also reported the racial discrimination to the Department of Education but we all know where that leads for people of other Nationalities. They usually don’t take other people’s cases.

I also complained that as assignments I submitted which was initially given a “A” grade went missing from the post and then later the Professor regraded them and gave them a 40 and 45 respectively and I had proof too. The same Professor marked my correct answers wrong on one of the quizes, and on another timed quiz, the link he attached refused to open so I missed marks on that one.

Another Professor actually admitted to deleted an assignment I submitted stating “it was all wrong” and that she “would have given me a “0.” After resubmitted a duplicated assignment with less information, the same Professor who threatened to grade it a “0,” gave me a 93. There was a time when an exam disappeared while I was taking it, because the network was tampered with.

Another time another Professor added the word limit after I had completed my mid-term from 300 words to 500 words and then lied about allowing me to retake it, when he hadn’t refreshed it so that it could enable me to retake it. I have had a Professor deny a reference that she posted for our citation and stated that the reference wasn’t scholarly but she posted it on the academic forum for us to use its content. The same Professor tried to deplete points by claiming my APA style document or assignment had “style” issues which prompted the lower grades.

I can go on and on, spoke to just about anyone I could about it but one thing will always remain an issue, immigrant students are treated very poorly and systemically degraded, even flunked and whistle blowers suspended. The man who suspended me even threatened that there were chances I wouldn’t be re-enrolled because of the continual grievances I was pointing out that they were perpetrating. Oh and by the way, they observe “Christian values,” and “civility” when one of their Professors submitted study material that was too faint to read and in an disorderly manner that the pages weren’t in order, while some pages were “blacked out” to prevent readability.

I could go on and on about Regent’s double standard policies only affecting people of other Nationalities. But that is to say, you’re not alone. Regent University doesn’t have a student Union at the Virginia Beach branch except for the one in the UK where Democracy and democratic values are upheld and that I believe is done by design. I hope one day Regent University can live up to its standards because as we speak, it’s as corrupt as any other unrecognized institution regardless of their accolades and until racism is eradicated, there are still a few corrupt officials will continue to advance the “White supremacy” agenda because that’s what it boils down to.

We need a global anti-racism initiative if the UN cannot come to our aid even with the Declarations of Human Rights, there needs to be a protective agency that actually looks into complaints to ensure fairness is achieved.
