Native American (Hidden) Heritage (pdf)

The 2000 census states that approximately 80,000 people in Ohio
identify themselves as American Indian or have a mixed American Indian
heritage. Estimates from ethnologists are much higher. Native American
(Hidden) Heritage will show people how to explore this heritage in their
own family and neighbors and in the history of their locales. This program
will use family stories, songs, folk sayings, cultural artifacts and other
methods. Workshop participants will also engage in role-playing and learn
interviewing skills to optimize the success of their investigations.

This program will also help connect participants with present day, local
people of Native American ancestry, to explore the common ties of
ethnicity and geography. We will also identify distinguishing physical
characteristics and health conditions that are consistent among those with
Native Heritage.
