Forum: White and Pakistani

Posted by: liveinthetao

Hey any and everyone. I am in a tumultuous multiracial relationship. I am an American, Taoist/Buddhist male and am ‘white’ (with ancestry in Swedish, Danish, Scottish, Irish, English, German, French and possible traces of American Indian backgrounds) and my girlfriend is a Pakistani Muslim of the Northwest Frontier Province and a first generation immigrant here in the U.S. We have been together for almost a year and are extremely happy with one another. However, given the patterns of endogamy generated by both the Pakistani community and the values and norms of the Islamic faith, we are experiencing extreme difficulty dealing with her familial objections to our relationship (her parents have never met me and do not know I exist, her mother may suspect; one sister hates me, one does not object). I began this account here to ask if anyone might be able to share experiences or lend advice that could help us increase communication and acceptance of our relationship, especially with respect to her family. I also must point out that it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day today and that he is one of my personal heroes. I appreciate this site as a source of information and any and all affiliated it; I can think of no better force working to make King’s dream come true than people dedicated to the acceptance of the most controversial issues in skin color: its mixing.
